As parents with super active kids one of the things you do to burn off their excess energy is get them in every sport and camp you can afford.  You do anything and everything to get them moving.

What you may not have realized is that you have been providing the rocket fuel for reading growth.

That's right.  The secret rocket fuel for reading growth and increased learning is exercise! How? Well, exercise boosts reading growth and learning in three ways:
  1. enhances attention
  2. stimulates motivation
  3. increases alertness
What does that mean for you?  How can you use this untapped rocket fuel?

Easy, instead of letting them get on the phone on the way home from their sporting events, have multiple books at their reading level in the car, and encourage them to read.

By linking sport and reading you will help create a life long habit of exercise and reading.

As parents we know the frustration of trying to get our child to read.  We also understand the fear that our child will fall further and further behind in school and in life if they can't read.  These 5 simple tips might make reading less of a struggle for your kids.
  1. RELAX And Go Slow.  Too much information too fast with too much pressure can cause anxiety and stress and literally shut down the learning part of the brain.  Take your time and have fun with it.
  2. Read, Read, Read.  I know, duh right? But it doesn't hurt to be reminded of this simple truth; if you want to get better at something difficult you gotta put the work in.  Create a habit of reading by linking it with something that happens everyday.  It could be as simple as linking reading with breakfast.  Have a stack of books where ever it is your child is eating.  No phone no TV while eating. Just reading.  Make sure these are high interest books. They can be repeats of old favorites.  The goal is to create the lifelong habit of reading.
  3. The Team, The Team, The Team.  Make reading a team sport.  Read together.  Find a book that you'll both enjoy and take turns reading.  Do this for about 15 minutes and you'll find that time flies.  Refer back to tip two, and make this a habit.
  4. Be Silly.  This is your opportunity to be a performer. When you read do all the silly and expressive voices you can think of.  Your kid will look at you like you're crazy but, they'll enjoy it!
  5. Celebrate Wins. After every reading, every time, give a super duper over the top dopamine inducing celebration!  Creating positive associations after each reading session will link reading with emotions of happiness.  This will help solidify reading as an enjoyable experience and cement reading as a habit.
These 5 tips repeated consistently over time will help produce a confident reader.  As a parent it will give you the satisfaction and security of knowing your child has a skill that will benefit them their entire life.
